Who regulates septic tanks in Ceredigion?
Ceredigion is in Wales, so private sewage discharges are regulated by Natural Resources Wales (NRW). In Wales most septic tanks and package treatment plants need a free, one-off registration of an exemption with Natural Resources Wales. To qualify, the discharge must be domestic only, you must be unable to connect to a public foul sewer, and the system must meet design standards and be far enough from sensitive sites. The limits are under 2,000 litres a day to ground or 5,000 litres a day to a watercourse. Discharges to surface water must come from a package treatment plant. Building regulations approval is also required.
Building approval for a new or replacement system comes from Ceredigion County Council building control or a registered building control approver. Read more in our Wales regulations guide.
Ground and soil conditions
Ceredigion is mainly mudstone and shale with heavy, slow-draining soils, plus upland peat towards the Cambrian Mountains. Percolation tests often favour a treatment plant or an engineered drainage field.

Protected waters and environmental checks
The Afon Teifi is a Special Area of Conservation with known phosphorus pressure, and Cardigan Bay is a marine SAC known for its bottlenose dolphins. Discharges near these need careful siting and treatment.
Local practicalities
There are many smallholdings, farms and holiday lets along the coast. Holiday properties should be sized for peak occupancy, and NRW registration is needed for most small discharges.

Frequently asked questions
We're buying a smallholding near Lampeter. What should we check?
Ask for the NRW registration, the location of the tank and outlet, and desludging records. Then get an installer's inspection if there's any doubt, especially near the Teifi.
Who approves the installation itself?
Building regulations approval comes from Ceredigion County Council or a registered building control approver. NRW deals with the discharge.
